US taxpayers living and working abroad. have until June 17th, 2016 to file! This 2-month extension is not available to citizens and resident aliens who are merely traveling outside the country. Members of the military and others serving in combat zones have until 180 days after they leave those zones to file returns and pay any taxes due.
Those eligible for the June 17th extension deadline include citizens with one of the following statuses:
● Military persons living outside the country.
● US citizens living abroad.
● Persons with resident alien status, but not living in the States.
When seeking the benefit of this extension, the taxpayer is required to attach a statement to their return setting forth which eligibility status they meet.
If you are unable to meet the June 17th deadline, you can ask for an additional deadline to October 15th. However, keep in mind the additional extension to October does not include an extension of time to pay any taxes due. The extension applies only to the requirement of filing. Failure to pay on time results in fines and penalties. When filing an extension, you are required to estimated and 90% of the expected liability. Failure to do so may subject you to the failure to pay penalty.
