An Audit is not a Criminal Tax Investigation

An audit is a review supporting documentation related to items listed on a tax return(s).  It is not a criminal tax investigation.  There is a huge difference between the two.  There is always the danger in an audit exam that the taxpayer may disclose items that may lead to a criminal investigation referral.  This is but one of the reasons that we do not recommend client represent themselves at audit.
